Description
navit doesn't update map when any osd items enabled in navit.xml
eg
<osd enabled="yes" type="compass"/>
is enough to stop the map background from being updated.
the vehicle marker carries on moving, and eventually disappears of screen. the map never catches up.
the default gtk is almost unusable when driving so this is a big problem for me.
any ideas?

I think by default Navit on SHR is configured to use built-in GUI, not GTK. This GUI has OSD compass, distance to destination, etc. features, maybe you could give it a try.
Try running navit in console make sure you see this:
navit:main_real:Using '/usr/share/navit/navit.xml'
If not, try removing navit config files in your $HOME.
Default settings works very well for me, I only customized map files.
If your vehicle marker moves out of map maybe map follow feature is disabled.
